September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a reminder to all of us how important it is to recognise when our pets might be hurting. At Paws and Claws Neston, I see firsthand how pets communicate their needs, even if it’s not always obvious at first.
Animals are experts at hiding discomfort, which means pain often goes unnoticed. But with a little extra awareness, we can give our pets the comfort, support, and love they deserve.
Spotting the Signs of Pain
Every pet is different, but here are some common signals:
- 🐕 Dogs: limping, slowing down on walks, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, changes in appetite, excessive licking of one area, or growling when touched.
- 🐈 Cats: hiding more than usual, avoiding being picked up, reduced activity, changes in grooming, or litter tray accidents.
- 🐇 Small pets: tooth grinding, hunched posture, reduced grooming, lack of appetite.
If you notice any of these changes, it may be time for a vet check

A Personal Story: Caring for Older Pets
In my work, I’ve had the privilege of looking after some wonderful older chihuahuas. Their little legs can’t manage long walks anymore, but that doesn’t mean they miss out. Instead, I carry them outside or take a pet stroller, enabling them to enjoy the fresh air, new smells, and the mental stimulation of a change in scenery.
This gentle routine helps keep them happy and engaged without overexerting their bodies. It’s a small reminder that caring for pets with pain or age related issues isn’t just about medication, it’s about finding ways to enrich their lives safely and kindly.

How You Can Help Your Pet
- Pay attention to changes, even subtle ones matter.
- Schedule regular vet visits, early intervention makes a big difference.
- Adapt their environment, soft bedding, ramps, or raised bowls can ease daily life.
- Offer gentle activity, short walks, play, or simply fresh air can do wonders.
- Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t seem right, it’s worth checking.

Our Role as Pet Carers
As your trusted pet sitter and dog walker, we’re here not just for walks and feeds, but also to notice changes you might not see every day. If we spot signs of discomfort, from slowing down on a walk to changes in mood, we’ll always let you know.
Because at the heart of what we do is simple: keeping your pets happy, comfortable, and loved. 💚

Final Thought
Animal Pain Awareness Month is a wonderful reminder that our pets rely on us to speak up for them. By staying aware, making small adjustments, and giving them the care they need, we can make sure they enjoy every stage of life, from energetic puppy zoomies to peaceful golden years.
